Confession

The Sacrament of Reconciliation, also called Confession, is one of the most personal and powerful ways we encounter the mercy of Jesus Christ. In this sacrament, the Lord meets us with compassion, forgives our sins, heals what is wounded in us, and draws us back into deeper communion with Him and with His Church.

Confession is not merely about admitting wrongs. It is about returning to the heart of God. It is a place of grace, peace, honesty, and hope. Whether you go regularly or have been away for many years, you are welcome.

A Gift of God’s Mercy

Jesus gave the Church this sacrament so that we would never be left alone with our sin, our regret, or our failures. Through the priest, Christ Himself extends forgiveness and restores us with His mercy.

In Confession, we receive:

  • forgiveness of sins
  • healing and spiritual strength
  • reconciliation with God and the Church
  • grace to begin again

No one is ever beyond the reach of God’s mercy. The Lord never tires of welcoming us back.

Why Go to Confession?

All of us need God’s mercy. Confession helps us grow in humility, self-knowledge, and holiness. It clears away what separates us from God and helps us live with greater freedom, peace, and joy.

Catholics should receive the sacrament whenever conscious of mortal sin, and at least once a year. Many Catholics also find it spiritually fruitful to go more regularly, especially during Advent and Lent, or as part of a steady pattern of spiritual growth.

How to Go to Confession

You do not need to be afraid. You do not need to have perfect words. Come as you are, with sincerity and trust in God’s mercy.

A simple way to go to Confession is:

  1. Prepare with prayer and examine your conscience.
  2. Begin with the Sign of the Cross.
  3. Say, “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been [length of time] since my last confession.”
  4. Confess your sins honestly and simply.
  5. Listen to the priest’s counsel and receive your penance.
  6. Pray an Act of Contrition.
  7. Receive absolution.
  8. Carry out your penance as soon as you reasonably can.

If you are uncertain at any point, the priest will guide you.

Act of Contrition

One common form of the Act of Contrition is:

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,
I have sinned against You whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with Your help,
to do penance, to sin no more,
and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.
In His name, my God, have mercy. Amen.

Preparing Your Heart

Before Confession, it is good to spend a few quiet moments asking the Holy Spirit for light and honesty. An examination of conscience helps us look prayerfully at our lives, our choices, and the ways we may have failed to love God and neighbor.

You might reflect on questions such as these:

  • Have I put God first in my life?
  • Have I neglected Sunday Mass or Holy Days of Obligation?
  • Have I used God’s name carelessly?
  • Have I failed in love, truthfulness, patience, purity, or charity?
  • Have I harmed others by anger, gossip, selfishness, or neglect?
  • Have I turned away from what I know God is asking of me?

If You Have Been Away

Perhaps it has been years. Perhaps you are nervous. Perhaps you are not sure you remember how.

That is all right.

Many people find that the hardest part of Confession is simply deciding to come. But once they do, they often leave with a deep sense of relief, peace, and gratitude. God is not waiting to condemn you. He is waiting to welcome you home.

For Children and Families

Parents are encouraged to help their children understand Confession as a gift of God’s love and mercy. Children preparing for First Reconciliation should do so through the parish’s sacramental preparation process.
