Strengthened by the Holy Spirit
In Confirmation, we receive a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit that deepens the grace of Baptism and strengthens us to live and share our Catholic faith.
This sacrament draws us more closely to Christ and His Church. It is a gift of grace for the journey ahead, helping us grow in faith, serve others, and bear witness to the Gospel.
Confirmation in our diocese: restored order
St. Francis Xavier follows the restored order of the sacraments of initiation in the Diocese of Tulsa and Eastern Oklahoma:
Baptism → Confirmation → First Holy Communion
Under the diocesan plan, children ordinarily receive Confirmation and then First Holy Communion during the same Mass in third grade, around eight or nine years of age.
Many adults remember receiving Confirmation as teenagers. The restored order places Confirmation earlier, before First Holy Communion, so children receive its strengthening grace as they begin their Eucharistic life.
This is a change in the timing of preparation and reception, not in the meaning of the sacrament. Confirmation is not a graduation or a reward for reaching a certain level of maturity. It is God’s gift to help us grow.
Ask about preparation
Call the parish office to learn about Confirmation preparation at St. Francis Xavier. We will explain the current schedule and next steps for children, teenagers, or adults.
Let us know which sacraments you or your child have already received so we can help identify the appropriate path.

What happens at Confirmation?
The bishop, or a priest authorized to confirm, anoints the candidate’s forehead with sacred chrism while laying a hand on the candidate and speaking the sacramental words.
Sacred chrism is perfumed oil consecrated by the bishop. The anointing expresses the seal of the Holy Spirit and the candidate’s deeper belonging to Christ.
Preparing children and supporting families
Preparation helps children learn about the Holy Spirit, understand the sacrament, and grow in prayer and participation in the Mass. Under restored order, this preparation is closely connected with preparation for First Holy Communion.
Parents help children live what they are learning through family prayer, Sunday Mass, and everyday acts of kindness and service. The parish will explain the preparation requirements and guide families in choosing an eligible sponsor.
You do not need to have every answer. We welcome your questions and want to support your family throughout the process.
What if a teenager or adult has not been confirmed?
Please contact us. The younger age for children’s Confirmation does not close the door to anyone who has not yet received the sacrament.
Whether you missed preparation, moved between parishes, or are returning to the practice of your faith, we can help. Call the office to arrange a conversation with Father Jeff about your circumstances and preparation.
If you were baptized in another Christian community or are considering becoming Catholic, let us know. Your preparation will take account of your baptismal history and your journey of faith.
Faith continues after Confirmation
Receiving Confirmation does not mean we have finished learning or growing. Its grace strengthens us for a lifetime of following Christ.
Children continue in faith formation as they grow. Adults also continue to deepen their faith through worship, prayer, learning, and service.
Wherever you are on that journey, we would be glad to help you take the next step.
