OCIA/Becoming Catholic

Are you interested in becoming Catholic? Are you curious about the Catholic faith and would like to learn more? Have you been attending Mass, asking questions, or feeling drawn to the Church? You are welcome here.

OCIA stands for the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is the process by which adults learn about the Catholic faith and, if they are ready, prepare to receive the sacraments and enter fully into the life of the Church.

OCIA is not only for those who are certain they want to become Catholic. It is also for those who are searching, asking questions, or simply wanting to understand what the Church teaches and why.

Who Is OCIA For?

OCIA may be for you if:

  • you have never been baptized and are interested in becoming Christian
  • you were baptized in another Christian tradition and are considering becoming Catholic
  • you are a baptized Catholic who has not yet received First Communion or Confirmation
  • you have been away from the Church and want to return and learn more
  • you are simply curious about the Catholic faith and want a place to ask questions

You do not need to have everything figured out before you come. A sincere desire to learn and seek God is enough to begin.

What Happens in OCIA?

OCIA is a gradual process of learning, prayer, discernment, and formation. Participants are introduced to the teachings of the Catholic Church, the meaning of the sacraments, the life of prayer, Sacred Scripture, and what it means to follow Jesus Christ as a Catholic Christian.

Along the way, there is time for:

  • learning the basics of the Catholic faith
  • asking honest questions
  • growing in prayer and relationship with God
  • becoming familiar with the life of the parish
  • discerning God’s call with freedom and care

This is not meant to be rushed. It is a time of listening, reflection, and grace.

Is OCIA a Class?

OCIA includes instruction, but it is more than a class. It is a process of formation in the Christian life. The goal is not simply to complete lessons, but to come to know Jesus Christ, understand His Church, and be prepared to live the Catholic faith with sincerity and conviction.

When Are the Sacraments Received?

For those who are ready, the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist are usually received at the Easter Vigil, though timing can vary depending on a person’s background and circumstances.

Those who are already baptized in another Christian community are not baptized again. Instead, they prepare to make a profession of faith, receive Confirmation, and receive Holy Communion.

Baptized Catholics who have not completed their sacraments may also be prepared through this process or through a related parish process, depending on their situation.

What If I Am Just Curious?

That is perfectly fine.

Many people begin OCIA simply because they want to learn more. There is room for sincere questions, careful discernment, and gradual growth. Coming to OCIA does not force anyone to join the Church. It is a place to listen, learn, and seek the truth.

What If I Have a Complicated Situation?

Do not let that stop you from reaching out.

Many people have questions about prior marriages, baptism, sacraments, family background, or time away from the Church. These situations can often be addressed step by step. The best first move is simply to contact the parish and begin the conversation.
