St. Joseph in Webbers Falls

Saint Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus Christ and husband of the Virgin Mary, holds a central role in Christian tradition as a model of humility, faith, and obedience to God. Though little is recorded about him in the Bible, he is venerated as a vital figure in Jesus’ early life.

Joseph was a carpenter from Nazareth, descended from the line of King David. He is first mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew, where he learns of Mary’s miraculous pregnancy. Initially troubled, Joseph plans to divorce Mary quietly but changes his mind after an angel appears in a dream, assuring him that the child is conceived by the Holy Spirit. Obeying God’s will, Joseph marries Mary and becomes the legal father of Jesus.

Joseph is a protector and provider for his family. He leads Mary and Jesus to Egypt to escape King Herod’s massacre of infants, returning only after Herod’s death. Later, he raises Jesus in Nazareth, teaching him the trade of carpentry and ensuring his spiritual upbringing.

Though Joseph’s death is not detailed in the Bible, tradition suggests he passed away before Jesus began his public ministry. He is honored as the patron saint of workers, fathers, and the universal Church.

Saint Joseph’s legacy is one of steadfast faith, quiet strength, and selfless devotion. His feast days, celebrated on March 19 (Saint Joseph’s Day) and May 1 (Joseph the Worker), commemorate his enduring example as a humble servant of God.
